Picture a time when young men expressed their affection by presenting a necklace crafted from walnuts to the girls who held their hearts captive.

This is known as Grotulja, a unique jewelry piece inspired by ancient golden treasures discovered near the Church of Saint Mihovil in the town of Trilj.

This tradition not only showcases the inventive spirit of the local Trilj residents but also acts as a bridge to their ancient heritage, preserving a profound link to their past.

Creating a Grotulja calls for basic tools—an iron needle, a piece of string, and, of course, walnuts. These necklaces can feature more than 20 or even 30 walnuts strung together, cascading down to the knees of the wearer.

The girls may receive multiple Grotuljas, allowing them to wear several necklaces—a charming tribute to their admirers.

This heartwarming tradition not only represents love and admiration but also illuminates the unique cultural customs that still exist in Trilj.

Make sure to buy Grotulja in September, when Trilj celebrates the day of Saint Mihovil.
